What are your goals in life?
Where is your live going and what do you want from life?
Stephen Covey said:
“Many people are climbing the ladder of success every day, only to find that it’s leaning against the wrong wall”
That is because we are too afraid to sit down and actually think and write about what it really is we want out of life. We are constantly chasing somebody else’s dreams.
More often than not the ones that plotted out exactly what it is they wanted from life.
That is why when we attain the goal we had in our head the happiness is short lived.
Whether that is buying a new car. Going on your dream holiday. Buying your dream house.
It makes no difference.
For sure you enjoyed it at the time when you got that goal but that fades quickly. This is because it is not what you really want from life.
Most people spend more time thinking and planning their birthday parties and Christmas parties or even a simple Sunday drive than they do thinking about what they want out of their life itself.
Unless you sit down and define exactly what you want out of life then how on earth can you possible expect to get to where you want to be?
That is the same as sitting into your car after deciding you were going to visit a new place. You have never been to this place before, you don’t know where it is. You just sit in your car take off and drive in the hope that you will find what you are looking for.
Life is no different.
If you have no road map of where you want to get to then how do expect to find your way. Sure you can float along with the flow and see where you end up.
Is that enough for you?
For most people it is not enough and that is why so many people are stuck in jobs that they hate. Stuck living a life they never anticipated for themselves. They are deeply unsatisfied people and want more from life.
So why do we use this approach with our lives. We only get one shot at this so why not make the most out of it. You owe it to yourself to achieve everything you could possible dream of.
To help you set up your road map to get there use this rather simple exercise. I really love it.
Define
Write exactly what you want from your life. It doesn’t matter how silly other people might think it is, it is not their life so don’t allow them to change your goal. If you do then we are back to climbing the ladder of success up the wrong wall again. You can use this for short term, medium term and long term goals. If you are trying to get in shape you might have a short term goal of losing 1 kg in a week. Medium term goals would be 3 months from now maybe losing 10kg. Long term a year from now maybe maintaining the body you have achieved and having a healthy lifestyle.
Refine
Write everything that you don’t want. It can be good to start here sometimes because by eliminating what you don’t want it can help you define more clearly what it is you do want.
Align
This is the final process this is where you write down everything that you need to set in place that will allow you to achieve your goal. This includes people, courses, equipment anything you need to help you get to where you want to be.
It is very important that you take this serious and really set out definite goals.
The one who chases two rabbits catches none.
Along the way to achieving your goal you have to forget about what other people say and think.
You need to be fully focused and determined on getting that goal.
Do not compare yourself to others who have different goals and personalities to you.
You just have to do the best with what you have got.
